Ministry of Defence ramps up electric charging across RAF sites
Six electric charging stations have been installed at the RAF Odiham station in Hampshire as part of its commitment to an electric-based ‘white fleet’ by 2023.
RAF Odiham has installed six new electric vehicle chargers to its base in an effort to support the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to having electric vehicles make up 25% of its ‘white fleet’ by 2023.
The new Evolt chargers, which allow 12 vehicles to be charged simultaneously, is the next step in the MOD’s Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV) programme.
The commitment focuses on providing electric vehicles and charging points for the MOD’s non-combative, civilian vehicles such as cars, lorries and vans, otherwise known as a white fleet.
A series of charging points and electric vehicles have been introduced to RAF sites over the country, including RAF Leeming and RAF Wittering, which received six and five Peugeot e-208 electric vehicles respectively back in 2020.
Other bases, such as RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, have also received electric vehicles as part of the programme.
The introduction of electric vehicles and charging stations has been funded by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) which, along with Government, has provided over £900 million with the aim of putting the UK at the global forefront of ULEV development, manufacture and use.
