Ford announces 249-mile E-Transit at IAA 2024

Ford has announced a new enhanced-range version of its best-selling E-Transit.

Europe’s market-leading two-tonne van is getting a new larger battery and other hardware upgrades to allow up to 249 miles of driving.

The new longer-range model will feature an 89kWh battery in place of the standard 68kWh unit. This should offer an extra 55 miles of range, and come with a heat pump as standard to maximise efficiency in cold weather. It will also feature improved DC charging capabilities over the standard 115kW, allowing for faster charging in public.

Ford says the new model is intended for businesses with longer routes or higher power needs, such as refrigerated grocery delivery

Order books for the enhanced-range model will open in October, with production scheduled to begin in early 2025.

The Blue Oval also announced that E-Transit Courier is now available to order. The E-Transit Courier is the smallest member of the Transit family and comes with a 43kWh battery capable of up to 186 miles of driving. DC charging of 100kW will allow for a 10-80% charge in around 23 minutes.

With 25% more load space than the previous-generation Transit Courier, the new van also features a payload of up to 700kg. Production of the van is due to begin later this year, with customer deliveries beginning in 2025.

Away from its pure-electric range, Ford also unveiled a plug-in hybrid version of the Ranger pick-up – a first for the segment.

Ford says the new Ranger PHEV will offer lower emissions, cheaper running costs and more than 25 miles of all-electric running without any compromise to the Ranger’s abilities.

WIth 509lb ft of torque and 273bhp, the Ranger PHEV has more torque than any other Ranger thanks to the combination of its 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine and a 75kW electric motor. An 11.8kWh battery allows for up to 27 miles under purely electric power.

Like current diesel models, the Ranger PHEV has a payload up to one tonne, and can tow up to 3,500kg, as well as featuring dual-range four-wheel-drive.

“The all-new Ranger PHEV delivers the benefits of electrification hand-in-hand with the hard-working performance that has built Ranger a loyal fanbase in Europe. We have perfected our first PHEV pickup in Europe to be a hugely capable tool for work and off-roading, as well as a premium vehicle with the comfort, connectivity and EV-only capability for family duties,” said Hans Schep, general manager of Ford Pro, Europe.
