Rad Power Bikes Radster Trail Review

When I hop onto an all-terrain e-bike, I usually know what to expect: a comfortable ride on undulating terrain and decent handling on non-technical trails.

They typically offer a smooth, cushy ride, reminiscent of a 1970s Cadillac. However, the Rad Power Bikes Radster Trail surprises with its comfort and nimbleness, setting it apart from the usual all-terrain e-bikes.

Performance and Handling

The Radster Trail accelerates effortlessly to its top speed of 28 mph, thanks to its torque sensor, which requires a bit more effort from the rider but ensures efficient motor assistance. Unlike many e-bikes that struggle to hit high speeds due to underpowered motors or inadequate gear sizes, the Radster Trail excels, making it easy to maintain cruising speed.

Initially, I had reservations about the 3-inch-wide tires, but they contribute to the bike’s nimbleness. Although not as agile as the Radster Road, it handles well for an e-bike with wider tires. The BMX-style handlebar and the 80mm Suntour fork provide excellent control and comfort, especially on off-road trips. The mid-step frame design enhances stiffness while making it easier to mount and dismount.

Range

Range Rating: 4.8
Estimated Range (from Rad Power Bikes): up to 65 mi.
Real World Range Test Results (from ElectricBikeReport): 75.5 mi.

Despite the 3-inch-wide knobby tires, the Radster Trail delivers an impressive range. Exceeding the estimated range by 15% and achieving over 75 miles was a pleasant surprise. Wider tires would have increased weight and reduced efficiency, making the current setup ideal for balance between performance and range.

The inclusion of a torque sensor further enhances efficiency by adjusting power output based on pedal pressure, resulting in better mileage compared to cadence sensors. The 720Wh battery is a significant improvement over the RadRover 6 Plus’s 672Wh battery, offering great value in terms of range.

Power (Motor & Battery)

Power Rating: 750W, 100Nm of torque

Rad Power Bikes upgraded the Radster Trail with a 750W hub motor producing 100Nm of torque, a 54% increase from previous models. This increase is particularly noticeable during acceleration and hill climbs, making it an excellent choice for riders tackling hilly or dirt road terrains.

The Safe Shield battery is a standout feature, incorporating thermal resin to absorb heat and reduce the risk of thermal runaway. This battery, certified to UL’s 2271 standard, along with the entire electronics system certified to UL 2849, makes the Radster Trail one of the safest e-bikes available.

Components

The Radster Trail is equipped with Tektro HD E350 hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors, providing solid stopping power. Although thicker rotors (2.3mm) could enhance braking performance, the current setup performs well.

The 8-speed Shimano Acera drivetrain offers a wide range of gears suitable for hilly terrains. The combination of a 50t chainring and an 11-34t cassette ensures smooth gear transitions, especially appreciated on off-road trails.

Screen / User Interface / App

The new color LED display on the Radster Trail includes a security feature where riders unlock the bike with a fob, adding an extra layer of security. The display is easy to read, though displaying the battery level as a percentage would be beneficial. It also includes turn signals, enhancing safety.

Riders can easily switch between Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 modes, with the option to set a maximum assist speed of 25 mph or 28 mph in Class 3.

Is The Rad Power Bikes Radster Trail Worth It?

Absolutely. The Radster Trail stands out in a crowded market with its speed, power, and nimbleness. It climbs hills effortlessly and hits 28 mph with ease. The 3-inch-wide tires provide a balance between stability and agility, making it suitable for exploring varied terrains.

The Safe Shield battery technology sets a new standard for safety in e-bikes, likely inspiring similar advancements in the industry. Combined with a robust frame, appealing design, and a comprehensive spec sheet, the Radster Trail offers excellent value and fun for its price point.

Conclusion

The Radster Trail by Rad Power Bikes is a top-notch all-terrain e-bike that excels in performance, handling, and safety. With its powerful motor, impressive range, and thoughtful design, it’s a great choice for riders looking to explore diverse terrains. Whether you’re commuting or adventuring off-road, the Radster Trail delivers a fantastic riding experience, making it a highly recommended option for e-bike enthusiasts.
