Extreme E: Andretti United claims victory in Arctic X Prix
Andretti United Extreme E got the better of Rosberg X Racing during Extreme E’s first-ever five-car final at the Arctic X Prix.
Taking place in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, the teams had to navigate various track hazards and difficult conditions on the circuit which overlooked the Russell Glacier, which was chosen as the venue in order to highlight the effects of the melting ice sheets.
The action began right away, starting with a thrilling shakedown event on Friday and carrying on all the way through to a nail-biting five-car final which brought Greenland’s first-ever motorsport event to a close.
In the end, it was the Andretti United Extreme E pairing of Timmy Hansen and Catie Munnings which came out on top, pipping main rivals Johan Kristoffersson and Molly Taylor of Rosberg X Racing to the post right at the death.
Catie Munnings, Andretti United Extreme E, commented on the teams victory: “I loved the challenge of this course. I think it was really different to what we’ve seen before and a new challenge for the car as well. I think what was interesting was that it literally changed every time you saw it. Every car would chuck out massive rocks and so your line might not be there so it was a very spontaneous style of driving and I also found it very hard to judge what the correct speed was, you have to think a lot more especially if you’re the first driver.
“It’s the first motorsport event to come to Greenland so it’s incredible that it’s at this level but I’m also really proud of how far we’ve come as a team especially from Senegal where we didn’t have a brilliant result so to come back now, it gives us a really good feeling going into the Island X Prix.”
Timmy Hansen, Andretti United Extreme E, added: “I’m really proud of Extreme E as a whole and of us coming here together, you know we are in the middle of nowhere in Greenland. Kangerlussuaq has I think 500 people living here and we arrived and everyone is doing their part. Pulling this massive event together is an incredible achievement and I think we are all the winners today.”
As things stand in the Extreme E World Championship, Rosberg X Racing maintains a narrow lead ahead of Jenson Button’s X44 side, with Andretti United Extreme E moving into third place with its win on the ice.
Next up for Extreme E is the Island X Prix, which will take place in Sardinia, Italy on 23rd and 24th October for the fourth round of 2021.
