Volkswagen electric vehicle deliveries doubled in 2021

Deliveries of battery electric vehicles almost doubled for Volkswagen last year, despite the manufacturer seeing a drop in overall sales.

Volkswagen saw 452,900 battery-electric vehicles handed over to customers last year, a 96% increase on 2020. The results came in a year that was still impacted by semiconductor shortages, which ultimately led to a slight overall decrease in global deliveries of 4.5% year-on-year to 8.9 million vehicles.

Battery electric vehicles now account for 5.1% of total deliveries, up from 2.5% in the previous year. The Group also delivered 8,882,000 vehicles to customers around the world, with Volkswagen establishing itself as the European market leader for battery-electric vehicles.

The manufacturer achieved the second-largest share of the US market with about 7.5%, whilst 92,700 BEVs were delivered in China, more than four times the figure for 2020.

The Group’s top-selling battery-electric model last year was the Volkswagen ID.4, which saw 119,600 units delivered. The ID.4 was by far and away the Group’s most popular model, with its second most delivered vehicle, the ID.3, seeing 75,500 units handed over. Further down the list was the Audi e-tron, Škoda Enyaq, Volkswagen e-up! and the Porsche Taycan.

Christian Dahlheim, head of Volkswagen Group sales, said: “2021 was very challenging due to global semiconductor shortages, but we nevertheless consistently implemented our clear future course towards NEW AUTO. The doubling of our battery-electric volumes and the high demand for all our vehicles clearly show that we are on the right track. This is something we will build on in the current year and continue to drive forward our transformation.”
