Polestar has confirmed it will launch its Polestar 4 SUV on September 02, as an alternative to the BMW iX3, the Mercedes GLC, and the Volvo EX60.

In an announcement today, the Swedish Performance brand revealed that this SUV version of the Polestar 4 will adopt a more conventional design than the existing ‘P4’ crossover and offer more “flexibility and practicality” along with “versatile storage capabilities for every journey”.

To prevent any confusion between the two cars, the current Polestar 4 crossover will adopt the ‘Polestar 4 Coupé’ nameplate, while the SUV will be known simply as the ‘Polestar 4’.

The latter will also adopt a traditional upright rear window in place of the Polestar 4 Coupé’s HD roof-mounted reverse/parking camera, which is used instead of a pane of glass.

Despite the Polestar 4 SUV’s more conservative design, its powertrains will reflect those underpinning the crossover. When it goes on sale, it will be available in either rear- or all-wheel drive, with a choice of either single or dual motors.

The RWD car is the longest range of the bunch, and can travel up to 391 miles on a single charge. However, the AWD is the most powerful, with 536bhp on tap.

Like the Polestar 4 Coupé, the SUV will ride on a 500-volt architecture, promising a maximum fast-charging speed of up to 200kW. Both cars are built at the Renault plant in Busan, South Korea.

In the UK, the Polestar 4 has proved to be a hit amongst UK buyers, with the Long Range Single Motor version the best-selling model. Ahead of its arrival in under two months, brand CEO, Michael Lohscheller, expects this newest iteration to “build on” the success of its sibling.

“[The] Polestar 4 has quickly established itself as a favourite among our customers, and we’ve seen strong demand from drivers who want distinctive design and performance combined with great practicality,” he said. “With Polestar 4 SUV, we’re building on that success by offering even more versatility, while staying true to the Polestar 4 character. Wrapped in a stunning design, this is a car I’ve been looking forward to sharing with the world.”

The Polestar 4 SUV is the latest model to join the Tesla Model 3-rivalling Polestar 2, the full-sized SUV Polestar 3, the Polestar 4 Coupé, and the Polestar 5 GT. Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but given the Coupé starts at £50k for the RWD model and £57k for the AWD drivetrain, its extra space suggests a starting price of at least £60k.
