Peugeot concepts hint at new electric 508 and super-sized flagship SUV

Peugeot has revealed two new concept cars that could preview a new 508 estate model and a new electric flagship to sit above the 5008 SUV.

Unveiled at the Beijing motor show, the Concept 6 and Concept 8 are said to deliver a “bold and tangible” view of the French brand’s future vision as it embraces electrification and intelligent mobility.

Peugeot said that the two concepts embody its ambition to “push the boundaries of design, innovation and intelligent mobility, while remaining faithful to the brand’s core values of emotion and driving pleasure”.

It added that the cars – revealed under the banner “French design, electric future” – were more than design studies and anticipated future customer expectations in China and globally.

That indicates that production versions are likely to go on sale in China before other parts of the world. That’s likely to mean they will be built in collaboration with Peugeot’s Chinese partner Dongfeng, using that brand’s platforms and technology.

The Concept 6 is described as showcasing a “bold new generation of large sedans” with the “elegance of a sedan with the dynamism of a shooting brake”.

Peugeot’s previous flagship saloon and estate, the 508, ceased production last year after 15 years and two generations, leaving a gap in the brand’s line-up.

Alongside the Concept 6, the Concept 8 hinted at a new large SUV to sit above the existing E-5008. Described as refined, sporty and “generous” in proportions, it appears to be a reaction to China’s growing appetite for huge three-row SUVs.

Peugeot says it is designed to deliver “power, space and dynamism” and announces the next chapter of the marque’s SUV ambition, suggesting a production version will definitely make it to market.

Revealing the models, Peugeot CEO Alain Favey said: “This motor show is not only about showcasing plans for future products, it is about reaffirming our ambition. China is a major driver of our global transformation, particularly in electrification, innovation and brand elevation.

“Today we are showcasing two new concept cars which demonstrate our vision for a bold new future for the brand, combining feline French design and driving pleasure with world-leading electric and intelligent technologies, for China and for our global market.”
