Jaguar Type 01: British brand confirms new name for radical 1,000bhp EV

Jaguar has announced that its all-new all-electric super-GT will be called the Type 01.

The British car maker confirmed the new title along with the first technical details of its luxury four-door ahead of the car’s full reveal later this year.

The name pays homage to the brand’s long heritage and nods to its vision of a future range of all-electric models.

Previously known as the Type 00, the Jaguar Type 01 will use a radical tri-motor powertrain to deliver more than 1,000bhp and almost 1,000lb ft, making it the most powerful Jaguar ever by quite some margin.

Jaguar boss Rawdon Glover said the new British-built super-saloon “looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance”.

The ‘Type’ element of the car’s name is a callback to some of the most famous Jaguars ever, including the iconic E-Type and the Le Mans-winning C-Type. Jaguar says these cars represent “an engaging drive with deep reserves of power, plus refinement and composure” – elements the Type 01 looks to recreate.

The ‘0’ element of its name represents electric propulsion and zero tailpipe emissions, while ‘1’ marks its status as the first Jaguar of a new era.

In that new era the Type 01’s will be joined by at least two other all-electric models, believed to be a luxury SUV and a large limousine which will sit at the top of the range.

Camouflaged prototypes of the Jaguar Type 01 will appear at this weekend’s Formula E race in Monaco ahead of a full reveal later this year. The car is due to go on sale in early 2027, more than a full year after Jaguar stopped selling new cars.

With prices expected to start at around £130,000, the Type 01 is an ambitious new direction for Jaguar, shifting it further upmarket and moving it closer to the likes of Bentley and Aston Martin.

The concept car’s radical design and the marque’s bold rebranding strategy caused controversy when they were revealed. However, Jaguar, which has struggled with low sales for years, believes repositioning the brand is the key to its long-term survival.

Glover commented: “We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. The Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the ‘1’, our first car for a new chapter, a ‘one of a kind.”
