Renault has confirmed it is not planning a performance-focused version of its facelifted, all-electric Megane in the near future.

At the launch of the heavily revised car, the new Megane’s product manager, Benjamin Kotlowski, told EV Powered: “We have no plans to launch a hot version of the Megane in the future. With this updated car, we want to keep things simple for our customers by offering just two trim levels, Techno and Esprit Alpine. We hope this approach will make our line-up easier to understand for new and returning buyers.”

On the back of ruling out an electric-only spiritual successor to the Renault Megane RS, Kotlowski explained that the Megane will be available with just one powertrain choice in the name of simplicity.

It is driven by a front-mounted motor producing 217bhp – a figure unchanged from the outgoing car – which is paired with an all-new 67kWh Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery producing 310 miles of range, 30 miles more than its prtedecessor.

Kotlowski’s words suggest that Renault will focus on cementing its position as one of Europe’s leading mainstream EV manufacturers with the award-winning Renault 4 and 5, plus the upcoming Twingo and this latest Megane.

It is expected that Renault’s sister brand, Alpine, will be responsible for producing the French firm’s performance cars. At present, its electric model line-up comprises the Renault 5-based Alpine A290 and the recently launched Alpine A390 crossover. At the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed, its all-electric A110 will debut.

This sixth-generation Megane is the second generation of the fully electric family hatch, which arrived in 2022 to compete against other C-segment family hatchbacks, most notably the Volkswagen ID 3 and the MG4.

Yet with the arrival of the heavily revised ID 3 Neo, the highly accomplished Kia EV4, plus an electric Alfa Romeo Giulietta by the end of the decade, the Megane’s latest raft of updates will ensure its competitiveness in what’s becoming a fast-growing class of vehicle.

Were Renault to change its mind about introducing an electric Renault Megane RS to its model range, its closest rivals would include the 321bhp VW ID 3 GTX Performance, and the upcoming Kia EV4 GT.
