BYD goes large with Defender-rivalling Ti7 plug-in hybrid SUV

BYD has confirmed that its rugged-looking, seven-seat Ti7 SUV will go on sale in the UK later this year, as its answer to the Land Rover Defender.

Sized between the Defender 110 and 130 seven-seaters, the Ti7 will be the Chinese automotive giant’s first car to run its brand new, performance focused ‘DM-p’ plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. It will also be the first BYD sold in the UK with seven seats.

Full technical details for the UK-bound BYD Ti7 are yet to be announced, but we know the DM-p system is made up of a 1.5-litre petrol engine, paired with two electric motors (one on the front axle, another on the rear) and a 35.6kWh lithium-iron-phoshphate (LFP) battery pack.

BYD claims the DM-p powertrain has an official electric-only range of 79 miles, and a 0-62mph time of 4.8 seconds. In China, the Ti7 is sold by BYD’s youth-focused premium brand, Fangchengbao, as the Fangchengbao Titanium 7.

Measuring 5.1 by 1.9 metres, the boxy Ti7 will also be positioned as BYD UK’s flagship model. Inside, it’s expected to adopt a well-built, screen-heavy cabin in line with the brand’s focus on tech.

BYD still has to confirm pricing and final performance figures for the UK, where the Ti7 will be sold as a larger sibling to the upmarket Denza B5 that’s set to arrive here towards the end of 2026.

However, we do know that plug-in hybrid versions of the Ti7 sold at home in China, the Middle East, South Africa, and several other Asian countries, have up to 476bhp.

A 680bhp, electric-only version of the BYD Ti7 SUV also available, but it won’t be making its way to the UK for now. Were it to be sold here, it would be compatible with BYD’s ‘Flash’ charging network, which can deliver charging speeds of up to 1,500kW.

BYD has confirmed that it will install 300 Flash chargers across the UK as part of the network’s Europe-wide roll-out to coincide with the launch of its Denza brand.
