All-new Xpeng P7 is brand’s bold answer to the ‘AI era’

Chinese car maker Xpeng has revealed a radical new version of its P7 electric sports saloon.

Promising an “answer to the AI era in form and function”, the P7 brings a striking new look to the high-performance five-seater, which is expected to rival models ranging from the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal to the Polestar 4 and Hyundai Ioniq 6.

“The original P7 was a milestone for Xpeng and a turning point in China’s EV landscape,” said lead exterior designer Rafik Ferrag. “With this new generation, we set out to design a pure electric sports sedan that could amaze at every angle. This car is our dream—refined through countless iterations. In my eyes, the all-new Xpeng P7 is a work of art, shaped with emotion and purpose.”

The striking new look features a slippery body shape defined by simple clean lines. At the front, slimline vertical headlights flow out of a black body line that runs from the windscreen, and a pronounced air splitter juts out from the shark nose front. At the rear a kammtail finish features equally slim tail lights and what appears to be an active rear spoiler beneath a long sweeping rear window.

Xpeng has said very little about the new P7’s technical specifications but we know the current generation car is built on 800V architecture and offers a two-motor all-wheel-drive setup that can get from 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds. An 86.2Wh battery offers up to 570km of range in the less powerful two-wheel-drive variant. We’d expect the next-generation P7 to at least match, if not better those figure.

Xpeng says the new P7 represents a major technological leap over the previous model

What Xpeng has said is that the new P7 will be a “major” technological upgrade over the previous “AI-defined” car. The brand is promising a blend of “AI-powered luxury, cutting-edge Turing Smart Driving, and an immersive smart cockpit”. It’s not 100% clear what that all means, but it hints at plenty of smart connected features, natural voice interaction and a development of the brand’s existing driver assistance systems.

More details are expected in the coming months ahead of a launch in Xpeng’s native China later this year. There is no word on if or when it will come to the UK or Europe. The Xpeng G6 has only recently arrived in the UK and so far the brand has only confirmed plans to bring the X9 MPV and G9 SUV to the right-hand-drive market.
